a kiss is not always just a kiss

So…what’s your most embarrassing moment? C’mon…I KNOW you have one. In fact, I would go “all in” to say that particular incident has just made an appearance in your mind. Am I right? It’s okay, we ALL have one, or two…or a hundred. The Most Embarrassing Moment is a universal experience; it does not discriminate. They often come in the form of a faux pas which is a social blunder. I know we are all guilty of committing them and in that moment they often prove to be quite humiliating! Speaking from experience, I know when it happens we want to crawl under a rock, turn back time, wave a magic wand to TAKE. IT. AWAY!!! Some have more than their fair share and others never admit to them. However, we ALL have perpetrated them at one time or another, either in word or deed. The great thing about most embarrassing moments is that when we are finally able to pull ourselves together and crawl out from under that rock we can often look back and laugh. They’re funny because they’re relatable…and in some sick way, when we hear about someone else’s social blunder, we feel better about our own. I personally think it would be really entertaining to hear and share your most embarrassing moments but I think in fairness and since this is my blog, I should go first…

I accidentally kissed my college professor on the lips.

I know what you’re thinking…how could that be an accident? Let me explain… I was newly married and living in Cambridge England and attending college. My psychology professor was a pretty eccentric older man. Let me clarify “older”, he was probably my age now, 44, but at the time when I was 23, well, he was pretty much ancient.  In hind-sight he was probably quite young and vibrant! …I digress. Anyway, he was married to an Italian woman and had been living in Europe for many years. He loaned me a text-book and when he needed it back we decided he could just pick it up from me during his next trip into Cambridge. He came to my flat and when I greeted him at the door he moved in for what I thought was a hug but being European he was actually moving in for the kiss the cheek thing that I was totally unfamiliar with. So as he leaned in toward me without extending his arms for a hug, it became apparent it was a kiss. It happened SO fast and I was SO young and naïve…and SO AMERICAN! I couldn’t process what was happening so, of course, I kissed him on the lips! I mean what else…right? You would do the SAME thing…right??? I couldn’t think! It just happened! I actually kissed him on the lips. I still can’t believe it. The thoughts going through my mind were “uh…this is weird…kiss not hug…okay…did I just do that???…I think he meant to kiss my cheek…where can I find a f…ing rock????” Without saying a word, I did an about face, grabbed the textbook and handed it to him and politely said “thank you.” He replied “I meant to kiss your cheek.” And then I slapped him! …Ugh, that last sentence is a lie. All I could say was “oh…okay…”

So there you have it…this is one of my most embarrassing moments. Believe me, I have more, but I think it’s now time to turn over the mic…
