  • Wabi-Sabi represents a comprehensive Japanese world view or aesthetic centered on the acceptance of transcience and imperfection.
The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete."

So…what’s your most embarrassing moment? C’mon…I KNOW you have one. In fact, I would go “all in” to say that particular incident has just made an appearance in your mind. Am I right? It’s okay, we ALL have one, or two…or a hundred. The Most Embarrassing Moment is a universal experience; it does not discriminate. They often come in the form of a faux pas which is a social blunder. I know we are all guilty of committing them and in that moment they often prove to be quite humiliating! Speaking from experience, I know when it happens we want to crawl under a rock, turn back time, wave a magic wand to TAKE. IT. AWAY!!! Some have more than their fair share and others never admit to them. However, we ALL have perpetrated them at one time or another, either in word or deed. The great thing about most embarrassing moments is that when we are finally able to pull ourselves together and crawl out from under that rock we can often look back and laugh. They’re funny because they’re relatable…and in some sick way, when we hear about someone else’s social blunder, we feel better about our own. I personally think it would be really entertaining to hear and share your most embarrassing moments but I think in fairness and since this is my blog, I should go first…

I accidentally kissed my college professor on the lips.

I know what you’re thinking…how could that be an accident? Let me explain… I was newly married and living in Cambridge England and attending college. My psychology professor was a pretty eccentric older man. Let me clarify “older”, he was probably my age now, 44, but at the time when I was 23, well, he was pretty much ancient.  In hind-sight he was probably quite young and vibrant! …I digress. Anyway, he was married to an Italian woman and had been living in Europe for many years. He loaned me a text-book and when he needed it back we decided he could just pick it up from me during his next trip into Cambridge. He came to my flat and when I greeted him at the door he moved in for what I thought was a hug but being European he was actually moving in for the kiss the cheek thing that I was totally unfamiliar with. So as he leaned in toward me without extending his arms for a hug, it became apparent it was a kiss. It happened SO fast and I was SO young and naïve…and SO AMERICAN! I couldn’t process what was happening so, of course, I kissed him on the lips! I mean what else…right? You would do the SAME thing…right??? I couldn’t think! It just happened! I actually kissed him on the lips. I still can’t believe it. The thoughts going through my mind were “uh…this is weird…kiss not hug…okay…did I just do that???…I think he meant to kiss my cheek…where can I find a f…ing rock????” Without saying a word, I did an about face, grabbed the textbook and handed it to him and politely said “thank you.” He replied “I meant to kiss your cheek.” And then I slapped him! …Ugh, that last sentence is a lie. All I could say was “oh…okay…”

So there you have it…this is one of my most embarrassing moments. Believe me, I have more, but I think it’s now time to turn over the mic…

Your turn! If you are willing to share your most embarrassing moments, anonymous or not, preferably not, message me through Facebook or email me: gina@simplyginamarie.com  Don’t be scared…I know you all have some good ones!

I think we can all admit that church is sometimes often, for lack of a better word…boring!

Especially for children!

Through my many years of photographing First Holy Communion I have found kids can be very creative when they while away the seemingly unending hour of mass. Here are few examples of things you might want to try the next time you find yourself bored out of your mind in church.

The most obvious thing to do is fiddle with a piece of jewelry or a wrist watch, however that’s only entertaining for a few minutes.

Playing between the pews or with a friend in the aisles is always fun,

or you can build yourself an imaginary fort and play UNDER!

Coloring is a nice quiet option,

or you can DANCE!

Sometimes it’s good to just put your shoes back on,

find a friend who looks to be as bored as you,

and ask about his day.

If all else fails, lean your head on someone’s shoulder,

I hope you have enjoyed this little tutorial.

And remember if you’re good, you might get to go out for donuts after.

Ming Studios in Boise is collecting objects of personal heart-break to be used in an upcoming international exhibit for the Museum of Broken Relationships. I have an object I want to submit because I know, all too well, the pain of a broken relationship. In fact, today, I feel it on several different levels. One of my favorite images of a broken heart is through the work of the artist Banksy. What I love about it is that the balloon, despite having been punctured time and again is still inflated and afloat. It’s imperfect, battered, bandaged but still full.

Although Banksy doesn’t sell any of his art he did recreate this piece for a charity event Help Haiti. It was purchased by Chris Martin, the lead singer of Coldplay for $650,000. Which brings me to this song and video by Coldplay, Gravity://youtu.be/fIyFgygYW7s …a beautiful representation of love and loss, of broken relationships.

Because we all have the capacity to love, we all have the capacity to hurt. I fully buy into the quote by Alfred Lord Tennyson, “Tis better to have loved and lost then to never have loved at all.” So on a note of optimism and in a metaphorical attempt to bandage my own broken heart, I leave you with this:

“Everyone says love hurts, but that is not true. Loneliness hurts. Rejection hurts. Losing someone hurts. Envy hurts. Everyone gets these things confused with love but in reality, love is the only thing in the world that covers up all the pain and makes someone feel wonderful again. Love is the only thing in the world that does not hurt.” ~Liam Neeson

In the comments below, if you’re willing, tell me what your object of of a broken relationship would be and why. Once I have mine complete I will share it as well.

For me, the sign of a broken relationship would be the car seat that my son was in when he was delivered to my husband and myself. I have held on to it over the years as it represents the love that was torn when his birth parents made the decision to give him to us. Out of their tears and pain, came our tears and joy. A broken relationship that has not healed over time, that has brought such pain and sorrow and love and joy and one that I would not trade for the world.ReplyCancel
